[PHP] New chapter released

# By deshawn and ixM, on 07/09/2008 05:13:01 PM
Hi everyone,

User image

I'm very glad to release the next chapter of the PHP tutorial. We'll now try to release at least a chapter a week so you can enjoy reading the best tutorials in the whole world again.

The first chapter released is also the first chapter of the second part which will teach you how to use databases with both PHP and MySQL. Newbies Paradise, for example, uses a database to store users' data, messages of the forum and so on. A good website has to use a database to be really dynamic.

So enough chit-chat and let's go!

Enjoy!

Hi, I love "NP", I have learned a lot from it.

I *just* registered here, and even though I've been wanting to do so for some time now, what triggered me into actually doing it today was a concern.

Up until now the tutorials here have been quite excellent, but as soon as I saw the phpMyAdmin section I had to take action, post a comment to let you know what I think of it.

Well, I really think that we as newbs, should only get simple and detailed tutorials, but we should also start learning things from the ground up. And phpMyAdmin isn't as basic as writing SQL by hand. So I think it would be a good idea to introduce us to the SQL command line language and teach us the principles of databases before even letting us know that there is a cool GUI database management tool like phpMyAdmin!

I am not totally new to SQL, I've gotten a sneak peak at its simplicity over at W3 Schools, but I don't trust any other tutorials than the ones here on NP. And because SQL is quite simple, and understanding the basics of databases is also not THAT hard (I think), I don't see why you, M@teo21, should skip this chapter in the process of teaching us PHP, which obviously has a lot to do with databases as I'm sure we both agree on that.

So please, comment on my comment ( xD ) because I wanna know what the chances are of you adjusting the tutorial so far or adding in a new section as a result of my comment (which hopefully means something to you)!

Sincerely,
temhawk

Hi,

First of all thank you for your comment and for registering here. :)

We both have different points of view on how SQL should be learned. Here, obviously, I show phpMyAdmin before SQL code. This could appear a bit strange, but I've had the time to think about it and if you should do it again today, I wouldn't change anything about that.

The reason is quite simple: I need people to have a view (aka a "GUI") of what is inside their database. I also need people to import a .sql file, and I didn't come up with a simpler idea than phpMyAdmin for that.
Have no fear though, SQL will be teached in time. New chapters are going to be released this week. :)

Doh! Nuts.

Mmmh, donuts!
