Hi all.

I have a linux based distribution from several years (mandriva, then ubuntu, and now Debian Lenny). I also have Windows Xp and Windows Vista in others partitions, but they crashed a couple of weeks ago, so I don't use it anymore.

Well, in fact, I have Ubuntu Feisty Fawn on a CD, but not installed.

I presently use Windows XP Professionnal and planning to buy a MacBook Pro.

Sorry to Linux fans. :'(

Well, I don't know why you are thinking I received by mail. I downloaded it and made a CD myself.

I keep using windows for the games and ubuntu and fedora for the distribution that I use most of the time.

I really went to use linux as an nicer alternative to xp and vista because please everytime I install vista and make the updates there's something that's broke or malfunctioning. :(

I am currently under ArchLinux Don't Panic (2008.1) after Debian Sid (testing/unstable), Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Mandriva and Kubuntu. I always uses the K Desktop Environment (version 3.5.8, I think KDE 4.0 is too buggy to be used as the only installed DE).

I chose ArchLinux because of the simplicity of its package manager (pacman), and its capability to be heavily customized, even if it is a binary distribution.

Well, I heard a lot of good thing about Linux.
But actually, I'm using Windows vista wich is correct for me. But, I'm thinking about swiching about Linux.
Why should I swich for Linux ?
Wich distribution is better for me (I code PHP, MySQL, CSS, xHTML etc.)

I use a lot of open source programs. Well, I would like to use Linux without Windows

It is a good idea ?

All disributions are good but I prefer Kubuntu. You can install XAMPP (WAMP for Linux) without problem.

For now, I only have Windows XP SP2, but installing Ubuntu Gnome is one of my projects for this year. I won't delete Windows since I don't know if my scanner and my printer will be compatible, and I want the transition to be smooth.

I already use mostly opensource softwares such as Notepad++ to code my website, GIMP for graphics, Inkscape for vector drawing, OpenOffice to replace MS Office (who didn't want to install when I had my hard drive changed because it declined the license number), Firefox for browsing.

Computer languages : XHTML/CSS, PHP/MySQL
Graphics softwares : GIMP, Inkscape
Operating systems : Windows XP/Ubuntu 8.04 dualboot

Update on my side.

I finally installed Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron this Thursday. Since I wanted to keep XP, I made a dualboot and everything went fine. The only problem I had, was some trouble resizing my windows partition. I solved it with a scandisk.

For now, I installed most of the needed softwares (for PHP testing and graphics design), and I transferred my fonts and GIMP brushes, so I'm now ready to get back to graphics design.

Computer languages : XHTML/CSS, PHP/MySQL
Graphics softwares : GIMP, Inkscape
Operating systems : Windows XP/Ubuntu 8.04 dualboot

Personally, I do agree with him ;) In fact, I haven't really tried Linux yet, but the thing is that I think I would be unable to judge Windows vs Linux, 'cause the appearance is very important to me ^^ (Don't tell me that I can do whatever I want with Linux too, I'm aware about it ;) )

Errr yeah. If M$ had done a good job, it's on making Window's design. I love Vista's one ! (but I like KDE4's one too)

EDIT : I don't like them any more ><
