Actually, i'm using Kubuntu and Xp on dual boot.
Windows for the games and Linux for the rest!

If anybody wants to try Linux, I advise them to take Kubuntu(or Ubuntu)! It's the best (in my opinion, of course)!

hi there

I'm actually using Kubuntu version 6.06, I like linux but I would like to know a little more about this OS
so I was maybe thinking of trying out Debian.

Is Debian a good choice or is there any other linux distros that are similar to Debian ?

Hi, Debian is a little more complicated than Ubuntu, if you begin with Linux, stay on Ubuntu quite long, enought time to discover and know more about Linux ;)

When you'll know Linux quite well thanks to Ubuntu, you'll be able to go onto Debian, and you'll really enjoy Linux at this moment ! :)

ok thanks for answering.
I'd like to ask you something else.

Does Debian have a default desktop (i.e.: KDE,GNOME, XFCE,...) or do you have to install the desktops manually ( using for example "apt-get install kdedesktop") ?

normann, you have to install the KDE packages (or gnome) manually, but be sure of all the packets you have to install BEFORE starting the installation. Ask to experimented users, or read the KDE(/Gnome) documentation.
On the debian web-site, there is also ISO cd images with KDE (or gnome) files pre-installed : it's an easy way to install a desktop : it's all automatic and done during install. But those ISO are sometimes not up to date ; You should do a little apt-get upgrade after install.

But there is no particular desk on Debian, you choose your desktop.

Also, there is no graphic package manager on Debian : just aptitude and apt-get. If you want synaptic or adept, you'll have to download them yourself (apt-get install adept).

You think I am useless ? That occurs often, don't care about that.

Ok thanks a lot, I guess I'll have to try debian then someday...
Because I keep reading everywhere how good and how stable it is.
But what scares me the most is the fact that I do not have a clue how to install grub or lilo boot-loader,that is the only thing that doesn't make me want to try debian.
I see you use Debian, What made you decide to use debian ?

Yes, speedking's right, you should at least update to Edgy Eft wich is a Long Time Supoprt version, it is ideal for security and stability :)
And if you prefer the lastest version, you can choose Feisty Fawn, witch support the WIFI connections, ;)

Nope, Edgy is not an LTS version. Dapper is.
